Mildred Taylor does not end the novel with a black and white issue, she ends it with a moral issue. The novel concludes with a troubled, young man being sent to jail, where he will await trial and likely a guilty verdict. It isn't about the color, it's about right and wrong..... it's about Papa's desire to save a life from a mob, it's about people working together in everyone's interest.
