Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry

In the novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, why is the land so important to the Logans? What does the land represent? What does the land allow the Logans to do that other families who are not landowners cannot do?

The Logan's land is theirs.... it represents their freedom, their childrens inheritance, the ability to provide for their family. Sharecroppers don't keep all of the profits for the land they work. They plant, harvest, and pay the owner for the priviledge of getting by. It's a vicious circle. If you have a bad harvest, you lose your home.... you can be evicted at anytime. The Logans, however, have equity in their land. Yes, they have a mortgage, but they also reap what they sow.
