How has Cassie learned the relations between races?

I think she learns by experience. She learns by getting splashed with mud by the school bus carrying white children; she learns by being called racial slurs by a shop keeper in strawberry; she learns by fearing the night men who look to lynch black people at night. Cassie has no illusions about race relations.
