Like Cassie, Stacey realizes the realities of being black in the American south during this time. He understands that he must grow up fast to look after his family. He must judge his friends, like TJ, who are reckless in a time that is dangerous for black people. Stacey learns that trust is earned rather than owed. Papa is often away working on the railway to pay the mortgage on the farm. Stacey learns that he has added responsibility to look after the family.
