In the novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, African American students are treated like second class citizens. The must walk to school, while the white children ride a bus. Their books are hand-me-down, passed along when the children in the white school receive new textbooks....

The school itself was made up of four buildings, which are described as weather beaten. The are 320 students, spread out between a mere seven teachers.
