Hey
they talk about on page 54 of my book:
"But instead of the graceful glide through the puddle that its occupants were expecting, the bus emitted a tremendous crack and careened drunkenly into our trap. For a moment it swayed and we held our breath, afraid it would topple over. Then it sputtered a last murmuring protest and died, its left front wheel in our ditch, its right wheel in the gully, like a lopsided billy goat on its knees.

OK -
first of all, only the white kids get to ride the bus.  The black kids have to walk and this is really unfair.  The bus symbolizes white kids' greater access to education.  The driver of the school bus _actually_ enjoys splashing the poor black kids when it rains.  Sometimes, the bus tries to hit them and forces the kids to jump in the gully and get all wet and dirty.  In chapter 3, Stacey, Little Man, Christopher-John, and Cassie dig a yard-wide ditch (which gets much bigger with the rain) in the middle of the road.  The bus drives right into the trap and the axle breaks.  So now the white kids have to walk to school in the rain just like the black kids.

So basically the bus trap is a symbol of the black kids triumph over the injustice of the bus.  They are able to get their revenge on an inequity in the system.
