The Victorian quality most alluded to in the poem is that of the woman's role in Victorian England. Women were property, and Browning depicts the Victorian husband as controlling and unbending. Whereas the Duchess has no control, even over her own life.

The poem also reflecta Victorian expectations; the purity and innocence of women, their demure behaviors, and the expectation of complete submissiveness to their husbands.
