RIP VAN WINKLE BY WASHINGTON IRVING

Rip Van Winkle’s wife, Dame Van Winkle, is a sour-tempered woman who spends all her time berating Rip for taking such poor care of the farm and being so idle. Defending her is pretty hard because she is largely a stock character. I suppose you could infer something up about her but there is not much textual evidence to support a sympathetic reading of her.
