There isn't a lot of traits that sets Rip Van Winkle apart as a hero figure with wonderful traits. I think we can say that Rip Van Winkle is a "simple good-natured fellow" living in a small village in upper New York during the time that New York is a colony of Great Britain. He harbours no danger or ill will to people.
