Why did Watie destroy the homes and farms of Union Indian families in the Cherokee Indian Nation?

The Cherokee rebels fight so that the political party led by Ross does not overtake the Indian country. I think this has to do with Watie having to convince the rebels that he is on their side in order to collect intelligence.
