What was Rebecca's plan and how did it backfire?

I'm not sure that Rebecca ever had a plan. Apparently she was pretty conniving. She had multiple affairs and claimed she was pregnant with Favell's child. Maxim demanded a divorce but she refused. Perhaps claiming that she was pregnant was her plan to stay married and keep her life. In any case Maxim shoots her so her plan, if it was a plan, backfired.
