Du Maurier uses a lot of plot manipulation to develop her characters. She leaves bits and pieces of information out to create tension and suspense around the. With the introduction of Mrs. Danvers in Chapter 7, Du Maurier creates a physical representation of Rebecca’s “ghost” at Manderley.Du Maurier thus provides a certain gothic element to the housekeeper and the story in general. This combined with the always pensive Maxim makes our narrator even more vulnerable to her fears.
