There are subtle differences when they get back to 2055. There is a strange chemical like tinge to people and things. There is a sign that has odd spelling. Eckles has a dead butterfly on his shoe hence there was a "butterfly effect". Removing a living organism from the far past set off a chain of events that changed life as they once knew it.
