The main conflict between Monica and Claire is the way they see life. Monica is a snobbish, condescending, materialistic, young woman, who not only believes herself to be superior to those around her, but who treats people as if they're ignorant and uneducated.

Claire, like her sister, is well educated. She is not, however, condescending, and her interests are found in the "nature" of the things around her..... sensory experiences.
