Victorian society was largely patriarchal. Women, depending on their class, were given social roles to carry out. Liza was a poor flower seller and considered low on status. She would have been expected to marry someone else that was poor and raise poor kids. Higgins looks down on Liza because she is of lower class and is a woman. Higgins can be considered an intellectual misogynist. He has little experience with women other than his mother.
