Explain why Twain might use repetition of the word "holy" in describing the hand-me-downs "Chambers" wears.

I think that "holy" provides a double meaning. Being Tom's pants, Twain uses "holy" in an ironic sense. Tom was anything but holy yet was treated like the chosen one by others. As well the old clothes were literally full of holes.
