Mr. Collins is a pompous self-absorbed man. He has no clue what kind of person Jane or Elizabeth is. He has an inflated sense of self-worth and cannot fathom Elizabeth's rejection. He expected that, Elizabeth needing a husband of higher standing, would jump at the opportunity to marry him.
