Probably the most complex character in the story--and therefore the "character of consciousness"--is Fitzwilliam Darcy. Although he is not without flaws (recall his own tendency to judge quickly based on social class), his positive character is steadily revealed throughout the novel. There is even a sense in which the reader is not quite sure what to expect from him. This is a sign of a free consciousness.
