Charlotte Lucas is very practical about marriage and almost thinks of it more as an arrangement than anything else. She wants to be married so that she can be comfortable in a home environment that meets her every need. She marries Mr. Collins for this very reason. Elizabeth, on the other hand, wants marriage to be a kind of romantic adventure so she is more emotional about how courtship and marriage should be.

Today, both ideas exist in the modern world. Hollywood movies would have us believe that love is the only necessary component for marriage; many countries around the world still believe in the more practical aspects of marriage and go so far as to arrange marriages with no thought to the romantic angle.
