Mr. Darcy proposes to Elizabeth twice (chapter 34 and then in chapter 58). Which one do you mean?

chapter 8-11 page 156-176

Well, we know that Mr. Darcy is initially all about family wealth, breeding and class. Asking Elizabeth to marry him is supposed to be below all his standards.
