All of the characters act and react to each other based on what they think rather than what they know. Irony happens because they find out the truth (about Mr. Darcy for example) and then realize that he is not at all what they (or she) expected. This unexpected knowledge is the source of many ironies whenever we see characters interact with one another and jump to conclusions.
