Jane's loss of Bingley and his absence at Netherfield can be directly linked to the importance of social conduct. Note, Jane's conduct was never improper, but it was in part directly responsible for what happened to the relationship between them. Jane never let Bingley know how much she cared for him. She treated everyone the same way, always happy, always cheerful, and always with kindness, but she was also very reserved with EVERYONE. Thus, Jane never allowed Bingley to see that she shared and returned his feelings for her.
