How did the Bennett family limit what Elizabeth can do with her “lively mind”?

Elizabeth lived in a patriarchal world where she was confined to the wishes of her father and her suitors. There is a limit on how much a female can control her destiny even if, like Elizabeth, has a "lively mind". Education only extends to a limited point. Marrying well takes precedent over anything that Elizabeth can learn.
