Lydia was head over heels in love with the attractive Wickham. Wickham, on the other hand, just wanted to escape from those he was indebted to. They married because Lydia followed Wickham when he left (ran away if you will) from the regiment and those he owed. Darcy took care of Lydia's reputation by making sure they did indeed marry. He wanted to save Lydia's reputation.......... and without Darcy's interference I doubt there would have been a marriage. The marriage was not a happy one in the end.
