The Bingley sisters are every bit as snobbish as Mr. Darcy, and they believe that they can attract his attention by acting in such a fashion. They try to upstage Elizabeth Bennett assuming that Darcy will find their behavior attractive, when, in fact, he begins to admire Elizabeth for not giving in to their foolishness. While Mr. Darcy is certainly a snob, he gradually changes when he sees how sensible and "good" Elizabeth is compared to the Bingley sisters.
