Green and Maroon are both symbolic colors. Stephen associates these colors with his governess, Charles Parnell, and Michael Davitt. They are seen to represent politics in both Ireland and his family.

The other major symbol in Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man would be the character of Emma. Stephen sees Emma as a symbol of purity.
