The narrator, from the beginning, does not seem to fit in with the other boarders. He especially seems isolated from the old man with the vulture eye; the fact that eye alienates him actually may show that he feels completely by himself - the eye is a reflection of his "I." Once he kills the old man and tries to cover up the activity, he is isolated from the neighbors and sets himself apart from the police when they come and investigate the crime. He does not fit in with the people, and he has nothing in common with the people in his household.
