Poe likes to make his protagonists mentally unstable and unreliable. Using them for point of view lets the reader attempt to make sense of what they are reading as well as figure out what their motivations really are. The narrator in Tell Tale Heart is obsessive with acute paranoia and delusions of grandeur. This guy is actually quite entertaining in a gothic sort of way.
