Does Fortunato ever understand why Montresor hates him? What is Fortunato's attitude toward Montresor?

No Fortunato never understands why Montresor is walling him up alive. I don't think Montresor understands what his own motives are either. There is only a vague indication of insults but Montresor is such an unreliable narrator that we can never be sure.
