Fortunato is wearing “motley,” and a cap with bells. This represents a fool or jester's costume. His costume is full of patches and colours. Montresor puts “on a mask of black silk” and wraps himself up in “a roquelaire,” or thick cloak. Their respective outfits give us clues to their personalities and motivations.
