Ah, I recently had to read this as well and wirte about the first paragraphs.... one of the few in my class to understand it, great poem.

Anyway, the character of Montrésor is offended by his friend Forunato, I assume you would know this. Montrésor believes that when taking revengance, there are three important points to make sure happen, this is stated by the sentence in question and those before it. 1.) You are safe. 2.) You make the person who offended you feel as bad, or worse, as you have. 3.) They must know it was you that took your revenge.

Basically, a wrong is avenged when the person that did it feels as bad or worse than what they have done.
