What is the "hope" spoken of through lines 6 to 9 of Poe's 'A Dream Within A Dream' referring to?

Is "hope" referring to anything in particular or is it simply speaking of hope itself. If it is the latter; then what are the lines' (lines 6-9) thematic significance / meaning?

Hope refers to whatever "hope" or life the speaker had with the person he is speaking to,

Yet if hope has flown away In a night, or in a day, In a vision, or in none, Is it therefore the less gone?
