The "midnight dreary" establishes the dark mood of the poem. The speaker is filled with "fantastic terrors" and the dark bird, the Raven, fullfills the dark prophetic elements of gothic narrative. Midnight, ravens are associated with mystery and death: poe uses this as an effective motif to bring a gothic dread to his poem.
