I think he wanted to know how one suffers for a cause. Anoosh, for instance, does not attempt to engage the young Marjane in a discussion on Marxism and its causes and effects. Instead, he shows her the picture of his wife with the marked out face and declares that the communists in Russia have no hearts. Acts of love and heartbreak become paramount.
