When the Shah came to power, the Emperor's belongings were confiscated, he was made Prime Minister in the new regime, he studied Marx and became a Communist.

Nope. "The emperor that was overthrown was grandpa's father", Ebi says to Marji on pg. 22 of The Complete Persepolis.

"Grandpa was a prince?" says Marji

"Yes, among others.." says Ebi

Basically Marji's grandpa was the son of the emperor. It is left unknown what actually happens to the emperor himself.
