Our town act 1

Examine Emily's character. She tells her mother, 'I'm the brightest girl in school for my age...' What is her tone? What is the significance of this structure? How does this contribute tit he meaning or themes of the play?

Emily is both intelligent and confidant, although she isn't quite sure how she stacks up in the looks department. She is proud of her work, but she doesn't have any particular goals as to how she'll use her gifts. Like the others, she is content to take on her future role in town as it is expected.
