Othello has been rendered the dreaded cuckold. A cuckold is a man who has an adulterous wife. Othello's whole identity is wrapped in the idea that he is a man in control of his destiny and certainly his wife. Stripping Othello of his perceived "manhood" drives Othello to violent thoughts.
