Why does Othello demand to see Desdemona’s handkerchief when he knows she does not have it?

Iago has tipped Othello of about Desdemona's "alleged" infidelity. Iago tells Othello that he saw Cassio wipe his brow with the scarf. Iago actually has the scarf and knows Desdemona won't have it when he asks for it.
