How is jealousy symbolized in Othello (his character)?

In Act III, Scene III, Iago addresses jealousy, saying... "It is the green-eyed monster," The "green-eyed monster", in turn, becomes a symbol representing Othello's dark feelings, the fiend that lurks in his mind and steers his behavior.
