When othello asks for desdemonas handkerchief why does she not at once confess that she has lost it?

In act 3 sc 4, Othello says he has a bad cold and requests the handkerchief Desdemona knows how obsessed Othello is about this handkerchief. She fears his reaction if she tells him that she has lost it.
