What was Cassio’s relationship with Othello before the beginning of the play?

Prior to the start of the play, Othello and Cassio have a very cordial friendship, as well as mutual respect. This would be the reason that Othello promoted Cassio. Othello, however, is quickly turned by insinuations and jealousy.
