The Crakers need myth to help them make sense of the world. Similarily, today, many non-subscribers to faith based religions feel that religious beliefs are merely a way that man has utilized to make sense of the world, "Snowman, tell us please about the deeds of Crake." Snowman knows they do not want the truth, they want a an unseen figure to worship, a figure to validate their existence, "A story is what they want, in exchange for every slaughtered fish. Well, I owe them, Snowman thinks. God of Bullshit, fail me not."
