The novel is about the Buendía family or more specifically Úrsula Iguarán who is the soul and backbone of the family.I don't think anybody really saves the day. Thousands of banana workers are slaughtered by the army, their corpses dumped into the sea.The Buendía family turn on themselves until there is only one left.

There is no hero. No one saves the day.
