It is well understood that music is a mood alterer. Nurse Ratched uses music loud and soft to control her ward. The speakers on the ceiling are playing music loudly, so McMurphy complains to Harding, who explains that they hear music nearly all the time, but never the news because the news might not be therapeutic. Music develops the plot adjust another one of Ratched's control devices which she can use very diversely. She can intimidate with it, frustrate with it, calm with it and even barter with it.
