Why hasn't the fog returned since McMurphy's come to the ward?

Cheif states "they haven't really fogged the place full force all day today, not sice McMurphy came in .I bet he'd yell like a bull if they fogged it ."

McMurphy's presence removes the men from Bromden's fog, which is a figment of his imagination, and his own preferred method of escape. McMurphy's actions alleviate Bromden's desire to disappear, so he believes the machine simply hasn't been turned on.
