The ending is so sad but it fits perfectly with the tone and mood of the book. Although Ratched has effectively killed Mac, she has lost as well. The men have seen her breasts, the ultimate symbol of femininity, and know she is a woman; she loses her power. Chief sees Mac is a vegetable and smothers him; it is an act of compassion. Mac dies having changed the lives of these men or at the very least, made them feel a little more human. Chief escapes and goes south, to "clear his mind". That sounds about perfect!

Thank you.
