What's the significance of Mac betting the man that he doesn't know what cards are in his hand?

I think this is when McMurphy starts messing with Cheswick, an inmate who is playing cards. McMurphy is putting on a bit of a show. He is playing up his gambling abilities but uses the ironic twist that, obviously, he doesn't know what cards Cheswick is holding.
