The novel, How has McMurphy allowed the patients to discover their own power and independence?

The one scene in which we see the patients discovering their own power and independence is on the fishing trip. Men who never laughed are laughing, the nurse isn't there to demean anyone or shatter their confidence........... they're simply having fun, living...... something they haven't done in a long, long, time.
