The inmates begin to think of other things besides their mental illness. They begin to say and do things that are "normal". While Nurse Ratched emasculates and isolates them, McMurphy builds them up and frees them through day outings, fishing trips, and prostitutes. He lets them experience human and primal urges that thwart Ratched's agenda to control and keep them in the institutions.
