The protagonist is Shukov. He and the other inmates battle to suvive the harsh conditions of a Soviet prison camp. Much of the novel is just Shkhov trying to survive hence it's an external man vs. man / man vs. environment conflict. Shukov, however, faces the inner conflict between material goods and spiritual identity as the book goes on.
